A quintessential Mason is defined by their ability to confront the inevitability of death with steadfast courage. Such an individual can gaze upon the visage of death and maintain the same composure they exhibit when merely hearing tales of its arrival. This reflects a significant aspect of the teachings in the 5th degree of the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis-Misraïm (APRMM) of Freemasonry.

In the context of the 5th degree of the APRMM, the Mason is encouraged to understand and accept the immutable reality of life’s transience. This acceptance isn’t an endorsement of morbidity but rather an acknowledgement of the life cycle, which aids in the development of a more profound appreciation for the fleeting beauty of existence.

The 5th degree espouses a philosophy wherein life and death are seen as interconnected parts of a grander cycle, not opposing forces. By acknowledging death with the same composure as when hearing its narrative, the Mason embraces an essential wisdom. It represents the understanding that life is ephemeral, and death is a necessary passage, not an end. This enlightened perspective is part of what distinguishes a good Mason. It fosters bravery, encourages full engagement with life, and cultivates a deeper sense of peace and acceptance.
